A resident of Bangalore, India, Justice Bangalore Shamachar Indrakala is a pioneering female attorney and a former Judge of the High Court of Karnataka. After an illustrious career as a leading woman Attorney, Ms. B S Indrakala was appointed as a District Judge in February 1993; Justice BS Indrakala has over two decades’ experience serving on the bench. She first held the role of District & Sessions Judge at Tumkur District, Karnataka State but eventually presided over various district courts across Karnataka, including Mangalore, Bangalore, and Raichur.
The second woman district judge appointed to the Karnataka judiciary, Ms. BS Indrakala, served as Principal Judge for the Family Courts, Chief Judge of Court of Small Causes, and Principal Judge, City Civil & Session Court at Bangalore. She also directed the Mediation Centre. In 1999 she was one of the judicial officers deputed from India to participate in the Judicial Training Programme on “Gender and Law” at the University of Warwick in Coventry, United Kingdom. In Conjunction with the National Judiciary Academy of India, the British Council conducted the programme. She completed the programme and later conducted similar workshops for other judges covering gender laws and court management.
In February 2012, Justice BS Indrakala was elevated to the High Court of Karnataka (only the third woman to be promoted to this position) as an Additional Judge. She became a permanent Judge in November 2013. She served honourably until April 2014. Later she was appointed as president of the State Consumers Dispute Redressal Commission, Karnataka, presiding over consumer courts in the state. She retired from public service in April 2019.
